This inspirational presentation demonstrates the power of education and its ability to transform students. Brandon P. Fleming went from being a delinquent, drug-dealing dropout to becoming a nationally acclaimed author and Harvard educator. He uses this transformational story as a practical guide to equip educators with the practices and tools that he once used to completely reinvent himself, and that he now uses to take underprivileged youth and transform them into global academic champions and Ivy League scholars.

This breakout session is a deep dive into the practices that are essential to leading through authentic connections in the classroom and beyond. Fleming breaks down how each teacher can affect change by meeting people where they are and honoring what every student brings to the table.

Using the Marzano Focused Teacher Evaluation Model and content/grade level standards, participants will create Progressions of Learning. Attendees will learn the purpose of the Progressions of Learning and how to use them to plan for academic success of all students.

This session, designed for district leaders who are charged with building the capacity of school leaders, will provide participants with strategies and language for coaching leaders through a systems lens.

In this session, we will explore what the Core Actions for ELA look and sound like in classrooms, and identify ways in which educators can leverage the practice indicators to accelerate instructional change. (Please also see the corresponding session for Mathematics Core Actions.)

The basis for this session is Ron’s book, Big Little Things: 40 Tools for Building a Better Classroom. We’ll explore the importance of effective visuals, teacher voice, listening and speaking skills, the use of music, priming, and many other “big little things” that make classrooms work.
